The third webinar in the NAEP & APU 2019 webinar series focuses on the skills necessary to gain employment or kick-start your career in the environmental profession. In consideration of the projects and topics covered throughout the series, this webinar will address important skills and resume writing in regard to open positions within Department of Defense organizations; federal, state, and local public agencies; non-governmental organizations; and private consultants.

 

Webinar learning objectives:

         · General overview of how different federal resumes are from private-sector resumes

         · How to create a resume

         · What to include in a resume

         · How to best convey qualifications for a job posting

Rowe Leathers holds both a GCDF and CCSP certifications in the field of Career Services. Currently, Rowe is a career coach at American Public University System (APUS), where she assists both current students and alumni navigate through their career journeys. As a career coach, Rowe’s aim is to help people find ways to meld their career background with their education so that they become unique job candidates. 

 

Her coaching philosophy is that skills are universal and that they should be valued and leveraged when one makes a career pivot. At APUS, Rowe specializes in working with students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM) careers.

 

Rowe pivoted her own career into Career Services nearly 10 years ago when she left mortgage banking after 15 years. She is a graduate of San Jose State University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in public relations with a minor in psychology.  Rowe is currently completing her MBA with American Public University.

Melanie Hernandez

Melanie Hernandez is a licensed environmental attorney (JD) and a Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) with more than 21 years of environmental planning and regulatory experience with the U.S. Department of Defense and in the private sector. She has a track record of successfully managing high-profile and complex multi-million-dollar environmental planning programs for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.


Melanie’s 20+ environmental law career includes experience with U.S. law firms and large and small environmental companies. She led the largest environmental planning program to expand training in the Pacific for the Department of Defense, managing a team of more than 40 people and receiving the highest client performance ratings possible.


Melanie served five years in Okinawa, Japan, as the regional environmental planner for the U.S. Marine Corps, spearheading the environmental planning program for installations in Japan and South Korea. While overseas, she managed several environmental issues of strategic significance to the U.S. and Japan, including the environmental review necessary to base and operate two new U.S. military aircraft in Japan.
